First BJJ Class Checklist
for Parents.

Before a child’s first BJJ class, confirm what clothing or uniform the academy expects, arrive early enough to meet the coach, trim nails, remove jewelry, bring water, and tell the coach about relevant needs. During class, watch how instructions, partners, contact, and hesitation are handled. Afterward, ask the child what felt clear or confusing and praise participation rather than performance.

Before you leave home

Clothing and hygiene

  • Confirm what to wearAsk whether the first class requires a gi or allows clean athletic clothing. Avoid guessing because academy policies differ.
  • Trim fingernails and toenailsShort, smooth nails reduce accidental scratches during partner activities.
  • Remove jewelry and hard accessoriesEarrings, necklaces, watches, bracelets, and hard hair accessories can catch during movement.
  • Pack a labeled water bottleAsk where bottles belong before class begins.

Information for the coach

  • Share relevant needs privatelyTell the coach about injuries, allergies, sensory needs, or other information that affects participation.
  • Confirm arrival time and locationLeave enough time for directions, paperwork, the restroom, and a calm introduction.
  • Give your child one simple expectationTry: “We are going to meet the coach, watch, and try what feels manageable.”

When you arrive

  • Introduce your child to the coach rather than sending them into the room alone.
  • Ask where shoes, water, and personal items belong.
  • Point out where you will be watching.
  • Let the coach know if your child is nervous without defining the child as shy or difficult.
  • Ask what stop signals the class uses and how beginners learn them.

What to watch during class

  • Are instructions short enough for the age group?
  • Does the coach check understanding instead of only repeating louder?
  • Are partners matched thoughtfully and supervised?
  • Can a child pause, watch, or ask for help without embarrassment?
  • Does the activity match what the academy described beforehand?

What to ask on the ride home

Start with experience, not evaluation. “What part made the most sense?” and “Was anything confusing?” usually reveal more than “Did you like it?” Praise showing up, listening, or trying one activity. A child does not need to look fearless for the visit to be useful.

Questions for the coach afterward

  1. What did you notice about my child’s readiness?
  2. Which age group and class would be the best fit?
  3. What should we expect over the first few visits?
  4. What clothing or equipment is required if we continue?
  5. Where can we see the current schedule and next-step process?

This checklist intentionally avoids assuming a uniform, trial offer, price, or contact policy. Confirm those details directly with the academy before the visit.
