Why a dedicated teen class

Teenagers do not need a louder kids class.

They need challenge that feels real, coaching that respects their independence, and a peer group where progress means something. Talk with Joao about the right starting point for your teenager.

01

Real technique

Positions, escapes, movement, and controlled partner practice. No watered-down drills and no pressure to perform toughness.

02

The right peers

A focused 13-17 cohort gives teenagers room to train with people facing a similar stage of school, responsibility, and growth.

03

Progress they own

Effort becomes visible through skills learned, decisions improved, and the ability to reset after something does not work.

Purposeful pressure

Pressure is already part of teenage life. Training gives it a job.

Decide. Adjust. Try again.

The mat creates a structured place to make a decision, meet resistance, reset after a mistake, and try again. Those are useful repetitions. They are not promises or slogans. They are part of learning real Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

What they practice on the mat

Strong without the posturing.

The goal is not aggression. It is capable movement, clear decisions, safe boundaries, and the confidence that comes from doing difficult work with control.

01 / COMPOSURE

Stay present under pressure

Pause, breathe, assess the position, and choose the next useful action instead of reacting blindly.

02 / BOUNDARIES

Use strength with control

Learn where force belongs, when to stop, how to tap, and why a safe training partner matters.

03 / ACCOUNTABILITY

Own the rep

Technique gives honest feedback. Students can learn to review what happened without blame or embarrassment.

04 / MOVEMENT

Build physical confidence

Develop balance, coordination, mobility, and conditioning through a skill that has a clear purpose.

05 / PROBLEM-SOLVING

Find another route

When the first move is blocked, students practice adjusting angle, timing, leverage, or sequence.

06 / BELONGING

Train with a team

Share difficult work with peers, help partners improve, and contribute to a room built on respect rather than hype.

The class rhythm

Every round has a reason.

Class length, days, and capacity need discussion with Joao. The teaching sequence will stay direct, active, and age-appropriate.

01

Connect and warm up

Get moving, check in, and prepare to train.

02

Learn a real position

Clear instruction with a reason behind each detail.

03

Drill with purpose

Repeat the movement with useful partner feedback.

04

Add decisions

Introduce resistance, timing, and another route.

05

Review progress

Name what worked, reset, and leave with a next step.

“I brought my teenage boys to Joao for self-defense, discipline, and confidence. They're very different boys and Joao adjusted his teaching on the fly to maximize results. I highly recommend private classes.”

Parent and teen questions

Know what you are joining.

Is the Teen 13-17 class live now?

Teen BJJ is available. Details, schedule, and capacity need discussion with Joao. Share your interest so he can personally call to discuss fit; the form does not book a class.

Why separate teenagers from younger kids?

Teenagers need a different tone, peer group, pace, and level of responsibility. Discuss how the teen program fits your student's age and experience with Joao.

Can a complete beginner join?

The teen program is designed to welcome both beginners and teens with prior experience. Students will learn safety, tapping, partner expectations, and core positions before pressure increases.

Does joining the interest list commit us to enrollment?

No. The list helps Joao understand demand, ages, location preference, and workable times. Your family can review the confirmed schedule before making any decision.

How do we find a class time?

Share the days and times that work for your family. Joao will discuss the current schedule and capacity with you before you make plans.

What if we prefer Austin?

Select Austin or Either location in the form so Joao knows your preference. This does not confirm a teen class or place in Austin; discuss location options with him directly.
