Today we are going talk about the stages of learning thus facilitating to master any technique.

There is a really cool concept called “The Four Stages of Learning” that will help you understand how people learn skills, concepts, and techniques.

The 4 phases of learning
With the globalized world we can safely say that we are in the Information Age, new information comes to us all the time and whenever we come across a new information we will have two possibilities:

– Distort it and seek to fit into our old categories.
– Let the new information organize itself.

Learning is a skill that is divided into four stages:

Unconscious Incompetence
We do not know how to do something, and we do not know that we do not know. If someone has never driven a car, they have no idea what it means.Let’s say a rookie fighter. He has absolutely no idea how to position his hands, arms, head and body when he is in his opponent’s guard. As a result, he is being bombarded with arm locks, finishing attacks and scrapes all the time. The solution is, of course, for the fighter in the guard maintain a good posture, but in the first phase he never even heard about the concept of posture. He has no idea that posture would make his life much easier, allowing him to nullify the guard and start working the guarding passage. He is both incompetent at not keeping his posture, and unaware that it is even something he should be doing.

Conscious Incompetence
Here you recognize that there is something you should be better at, but you still have difficulty implementing it.Then the person begins to learn to drive and soon discovers their limitations. Learn consciously to shift gears, stepping on the clutch, brake, etc. And all your attention turns to that, but the person is still not competent and only drives in the streets of lesser motion. You’ve been training for a month or two, and you’re finally beginning to realize that there’s a reason your coach is always shouting “posture, posture, posture!” You now recognize that posture is important, but you have not yet understood what exactly posture is and how you practice it. You know you must do “things” to maintain good posture, but what this thing is you don’t know exactly for sure.

Conscious Competence
Here you know how to do something, but it is not yet instinctive. You still need to focus on the skill in order to do it properly. We can drive, but we need a lot of concentration. We learn the technique, but we still need a lot of concentration to put it into practice. Now you have been training frequently and it is getting much better to put on guard. If someone tries to pull you to the guard, then you know all sorts of tricks to prevent this from happening, including good footprints, posture and keep your opponent back on the ground.Plus you have to think about it, but you’ve finally become competent in doing posture. This is a big step, but it is not the ultimate goal.

Unconscious Competence
At this stage the skill in question has become “second nature” and you no longer have to think about it.And this is our goal. All the little patterns we learn with so much effort join in a harmonious unity of behavior. And from there, we can admire the landscape, listen to the radio and talk while driving. Our conscious mind sets the goal and lets the unconscious care for it by releasing attention to other things. After an exhaustive training, we were able to reach the fourth stage and form habits. At this point, the ability became unconscious. However, habits are not always the most efficient way to perform a task. Our beliefs and knowledge accumulated throughout our lives filter and cause us to lose some information that is essential to reach unconscious competence. All are important of course, the four stages of learning apply to all of the skills you learn, not just by standing guard! It applies to learning at the level of change, applies to defending the neck when the opponent is mounted, applies to ride a bike, drive a car, or cook the perfect omelette. The four stages of learning is a very useful model!
The simple fact of identifying a deficiency in your arsenal, ie becoming aware that the problem still exists, has already moved from phase one to phase two in the four stages of learning. What you need to do is to learn the details of the technique, make thousands of repetitions to “root” it in your mind, and spend tons of time using this technique with workout companions and you will be at level four.
